A Case for Inclusive Programming for Homeschooled Kids
In recent years, homeschooling has emerged as a popular educational choice for many families, particularly since the pandemic. The reasons for this choice are diverse, ranging from a desire for personalized learning experiences to concerns about the traditional schooling system's limitations. Families with children who have neurodiverse learners with unique learning challenges or intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are the fastest-growing sector of homeschooling families in Colorado. However, amidst the freedom and flexibility that homeschooling offers, there's a crucial aspect that can be difficult to find: inclusive programming for learning and enrichment.
Inclusive programming refers to educational initiatives that cater to the diverse needs of all learners, regardless of their backgrounds, abilities, or circumstances. When families opt out of district services in favor of homeschooling, they also opt out of state-funded special education services. (Enrichment programming offered to homeschooled children through public school districts does not have to follow a child’s IEP and does not have to accommodate children with special needs.) But that doesn't mean that homeschooled children with unique needs don't deserve the highest quality learning opportunities just like every other child. So while homeschooling provides an excellent opportunity for customized education, it's essential to ensure that inclusive learning opportunities are available to truly maximize the benefits of homeschooling for all families. As more and more families with neurodiverse children turn to homeschooling, inclusive programming opportunities matter more than ever.
Benefits of Inclusive Programming
By prioritizing inclusivity in their homeschooling approach, parents can ensure that their children receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for success in life. Inclusive programming isn't just about academics; it's about nurturing compassionate, empathetic, and socially conscious individuals who can positively impact the world around them.
